Virgil van Dijk names the two toughest opponents he has faced

Liverpool center back Virgil van Dijk named Barcelona star Lionel Messi as the toughest he has ever faced. The defender, in an interaction with fans on Twitter, went on to add that Sergio Aguero is the toughest striker to mark in world football.

Ever since joining Liverpool from Southampton in 2018, van Dijk has revolutionized the Reds back line, turning them into a beckoning, robust force at the back.

As a result, Liverpool only conceded 22 goals last season besides breaking other records for defensive discipline. For his sheer consistency, decision-making and game-changing abilities, van Dijk was named the Premier League player of the season and PFA Players’ Player of the Year.

In a question-answer session with fans on Twitter, he recalled Messi’s brace against Liverpool in last term’s Champions League semifinal first leg, stating:

“There are some difficult strikers out there but probably Leo Messi.”

When interrogated about the toughest forward he has had to mark, van Dijk replied, “Aguero.”

Presently, the 28-year-old and Liverpool will be hoping the current season resumes after the worldwide lock down in the wake of the COVID-19.

The Reds are a whopping 25 points clear at the top of the table, and are staring at the possibility of the season being declared null and void amid other options.
