Virgil van Dijk reveals why he joined Liverpool over Manchester City

Liverpool star man Virgil van Dijk has revealed why he chose to join the Merseysiders amid varied interest from clubs all around Europe. The Dutchman accordingly did so after assessing a host of factors including future, the city and its fans and the club’s brand of football.

van Dijk made the big £75 million move to Anfield from Southampton in 2018, and has since risen to become arguably the division’s best defender.

He played a pivotal role in the Reds’ Champions League triumph last season, while his performances in the Premier League earned him the coveted PFA Player of the Year award.

Speaking to BT Sport, the 28-year-old looked back at how it all started for him at Liverpool. He said:

“Before I made the decision to choose Liverpool, I looked at all the aspects of the clubs; the way of playing, the team-mates, the future as well. The city, the fans everything has got to be a big part of joining a club.”

He continued:

“I think Liverpool at that time when I made the decision was the right decision and obviously to reach the Champions League final in my first six months was obviously a big bonus and helped me a lot in my development.”

Virgil van Dijk’s commanding displays at the heart of the backline may well result in a much-awaited domestic title for Liverpool, should the season resume in the coming months.
