Chelsea eyeing surprise move for Premier League defender

As an emergency option, Chelsea are set to line up a move for Aston Villa’s Matt Targett, according to reports from 90min. The Blues scouts have shortlisted the young full-back as a cut-price option should they fail to land their prime targets.

After 10 years at the famed Southampton academy, Targett was promoted to the first team at St. Mary’s, where he finished with 63 appearances before joining Aston Villa. He has, contrary to his time at Southampton, nailed down a starting spot for Dean Smith’s side, having contributed with two goals and as many assists in 24 appearances this season.

Meanwhile, Chelsea are desperate to sign a left-back after supposed frustration with Emerson’s form and Marcos Alonso’s perennial tendency to leave large gaps in a four-man backline.

The ongoing conundrum has resulted in Lampard fielding the versatile Cesar Azpilicueta at left-back many a time.

As a result, the Blues have been widely linked with Alex Telles and Ben Chilwell among others.

The above report believes that if Villa face the drop, the in-form Targett could be a viable budget option for Chelsea; more so, a quick fix to the chunk of defensive problems they are battling with.
