Barcelona are casting a keen eye on AFC Ajax’s shot-stopper Andre Onana, according to reports from Sport. The club believes it has what it takes to convince their former starlet to return to Camp Nou.
A graduate from the Samuel Eto’o Foundation, Onana switched to the La Masia academy aged 13, before making the bold move to Ajax five years later. It took him until 2016 to entrench himself as a top-flight keeper, but displays in the Champions League and Eredivisie last season caught the eye of many around the footballing landscape.
With talks between themselves and star goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen not having reached its advanced stages, there’s a large cloud of uncertainty over his future. ter Stegen’s Barcelona contract expires in 2022, and so does Onana’s, at Ajax.
The Spanish champions understand that Onana, still just 24, would be an ideal replacement should ter Stegen decide to part ways. However, they cannot promise their former academy product a hike in wages due to the financial crisis being sustained at present in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic.
